CHICKEN POX
Just a word to the wise for all of you parents of young kids. When my boys turned one, the doctor recommended that they get the varicella booster shot, for the chicken pox. So I agreed. They did say that they could still get the pox, it would just be a very mild case. Well...Cole has come down with the chicken pox. On Wednesday night, he showed me this spot on his knee and I thought it was a spider bite. So of course, since he's such a Spiderman fanatic, we were teasing him that he would turn into Spidey. Then Thursday night when I was making supper, he started scratching his hip and pulled his pants down a bit to show me something. He had more spots!! Upon inspection, we discovered about 4 dozen spots all over his body. He hasn't gotten any more and he's nearly all scabbed over already. But it was certainly the last thing I expected!! There are also 4 other kids in his grade that have the chicken pox and all of them have had the shot!! I think if I had to do it over, I wouldn't get that shot. I would just chance them getting the chicken pox.

From a healthcare perspective, I think the shot is still beneficial. The cases can be so much more severe without the vaccine. When my little brother had them, he had them pretty much ALL over - and then he developed a bad case of impetigo on top of it. But that's just my opinion - I just had to put it! =-)
Ally had a horrible case of chicken pox when she was 11 months old and also developed impatigo on top of it. It's just frustrating when you give them this shot that you think they won't get it and then they do anyhow. Oh well...he's scabbed over now and he never got sick like Ally did. Such is life I guess...
I agree..it is so frustrating! Poor Cole (and poor Ally! - remember though, the shot isn't given until 12 months). Looks like he enjoyed his birthday! Let's get together soon! I'll probably be out at the farm a few times in the next couple of months.
I would love to get together!! We can sit here at my place and catch up or whatever. Give me a call! It's been WAY TO LONG!!!
